How an Organic Modern Interior Designer is Redefining the Typical D.C. Aesthetic

For the D.C. Homeowner Whose Taste Has Never Quite Fit the City

Drawn to organic, modern interiors with a warm California vibe? Meet your D.C. design studio.
At Lorla Studio, we specialize in organic modern interior design–creating warm, inviting spaces that feel effortlessly lived-in from day one. Rooted in natural light, indoor-outdoor connection, and the layering of raw, undyed materials like lime plaster, Tadelakt, warm wood, and soft neutral tones, this approach embraces many of the imperfections found in nature.
If you’ve never quite connected with the traditional Washington, D.C. design aesthetic, organic modern offers something different: relaxed, layered interiors filled with natural light, rich textures, and an easy California-inspired warmth.
Washington D.C. has a strong design identity. Many of the homes lean traditional, with formal living and dining rooms, rich color palettes, and classic furnishings. It’s an aesthetic deeply rooted in the city’s history–and one that many firms execute exceptionally well. As the seat of the federal government, D.C. interiors have long reflected a sense of stability, formality, and tradition. These spaces are designed to feel established and familiar, rather than playful or relaxed, mirroring the seriousness associated with the institutions at the heart of the city.
While we can appreciate the traditional aesthetic, it’s not for us—and it doesn’t have to be for you either. If you’re drawn to warmth, earth tones, and nature-inspired interiors, you’ve likely had to search a bit harder to find an organic modern interior designer in Washington D.C. who truly gets it.
One of the biggest differences between our approach and more traditional D.C. designers is how we think about layering. Instead of building a space through bold colors and pattern-on-pattern moments, we start with a neutral, tonal foundation, layering texture on texture instead. Lime plaster, natural stone, warm woods, and soft textiles all have depth and variation that don’t need much embellishment. We create impact through nuance as opposed to contrast. This allows us to create spaces that feel grounded and cohesive. Less about a strong first impression, and more about how it unfolds over time.
Simplicity in Form, Boldness in Material
One of the principles we come back to again and again: restraint in form creates room for materials to do the work. In this custom dry bar, the palette is neutral and the lines are clean, but the travertine runs full-height to the ceiling, creating the kind of drama that a painted wall simply cannot replicate.
The millwork is interesting without competing. It’s refined enough to hold its own next to full-height stone, but calm enough to let the material take center stage. We finished the space with sculptural accessories made by working artists, because original art and handmade objects are often what make a room feel collected, personal, and truly lived in.
This is the approach we bring to every project: broad strokes of honest material, used with intention, balanced by restraint everywhere else.
Letting Reclaimed Materials and Traditional Techniques Lead the Design
This bathroom is an exercise in restraint. The color palette is deliberately soft, neutral and subtle. The interest comes entirely from texture and technique.
The floor is reclaimed limestone, a material that brings something new stone cannot: depth, and a sense of time. Each piece carries its own variation and history. Paired with walls finished in lime-wash plaster – Tadelakt, an age-old technique grounded in Moroccan craft – the surfaces shift subtly with the light and continue to develop character over the years.
This is one of the clearest expressions of what organic modern design actually means to us: when you’re working with reclaimed materials and hand-applied artist finishes, you don’t need layered color or dramatic lighting to make a room sing. The materials already do that – we just let them.
Minimal Interiors That Don’t Compete
At its best, organic modern design doesn’t try to command a room, it recedes into it. This dining room is a good example of what that looks like in practice. The material palette is minimal and quiet, the tones are soft, and there’s nothing in the architecture competing for attention.
Which means artwork by one of our favorite artists can take center stage entirely. We think about our spaces a bit like set design. The rooms we create aren’t meant to be the main event. They’re meant to hold your life, your art, your collections, and your guests. Loud spaces ask the people in them to perform around the design. Quiet spaces let you live. That’s the balance we’re always reaching for.
